Shoowa Design: Raffia Textiles from Zaire

June 15, 1988 – August 7, 1988

Museum: African Art Museum

Location: Sublevel 2

More than 100 raffia textiles, known for their complex geometric designs, were woven by men and embroidered by women of the Shoowa group of Zaire's Kuba peoples. The cloths--usually dyed orange, yellow, or red--were worn and used as currency in trade.
