Sculptures from the Flames: Ceramics by Gustav and Ulla Kraitz

August 26, 1994 – November 27, 1994

Museum: Ripley Center

Sponsor: SITES

Location: Concourse, Sublevel 3, Rotunda and Enid Haupt Garden

See some 28 sculptures ranging from figuration to abstraction by Swedish artists Ulla and Gustav Kraitz. To create in their works a luster and purity found in nature, the artists used kilns based on ancient Chinese models and followed the traditional art of Chinese glazing. Three classic glazes -- temmoku (brownish black), celadon, and oxblood -- comprise the Kraitzes' primary colors, along with an intense cobalt blue.

Organized by the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES).
