This bilingual exhibition explores the history of 40 Santos --painted wood carvings of saints -- which can be traced in Hispanic communities back to the 16th century, and the materials used to make and preserve them. X-ray images of some of the Santos on view reveal how new technologies such as electron microscopy and x-ray spectroscopy have extended our knowledge and broadened our understanding of Santos by showing the materials used to make and preserve them.
Sponsored by the Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives and Center for Materials Research and Education.
