Location: 2nd Floor, East Wing

This hall covers the prehistory of the same peoples featured in the Native Cultures of the Americas Hall. Wall displays show how modern archaeologists work and how they date the past with carbon-14, tree rings, pollen, and other evidence. Other parts of the exhibition feature:

  • Archaic Indian cultures of the Eastern Woodlands, including the Washington, D.C. area
  • Early horticulturalists of the Plains region
  • Hunting, gathering, and fishing cultures of the Pacific Coast
  • Origin of Eskimo cultures in the Bering Sea region Objects include copper, ceramic, stone, and carved-shell artifacts of the Hopewell and Mississippian mound-building cultures of the central and southeastern United States.
