January 31, 1984 – April 8, 1984
Location: 1st Floor, Decorative Arts Gallery
On view are some 400 examples of miniature Japanese sculptures in ivory, wood, and other materials. Worn from the 16th to mid-19th centuries, "netsuke" served as toggles from which to suspend such items as medicine boxes and tobacco pouches from cords attached to the sashes of Japanese kimonos. From the collection of the Peabody Museum, Salem, Massachusetts.
