Louis Sullivan: The Function of Ornament

March 24, 1987 – June 28, 1987

Museum: Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum

Location: 2nd Floor

On view are some 180 pieces--including drawings, models, ornament, hardware, books, and photographs--organized by the Chicago Historical Society in conjunction with the St. Louis Art Museum. Chicago architect Louis Henry Sullivan (1856-1924) was one of the most important and influential figures in late-19th and early 20th-century architecture in America. The exhibition provides an opportunity to better understand Sullivan's use of an ornamental vocabulary that allowed him to develop a new style appropriate to any type of building.
