On display are 33 works by one of the most renowned and influential individualist painters and calligraphers of the early Qing dynasty (1644-1912). The exhibition discusses the various stages of Chinese artist Bada Shanren's life and work, interrelating his paintings and calligraphy. Examples include one of the earliest known surviving calligraphic transcriptions of the ancient Half Stele of Xingfu Temple and a painting of lotuses -- one of the earliest surviving works by Bada Shanren (1626-1705). Catalogue The Sackler Gallery sponsored a related exhibition entitled After the Madness: The Secular Life, Art and Imitation of Bada Shanren (1626-1705), from February 15-July 27, 2003.
