75 paintings, letters, and publications explore Peale's gift for using portraiture to express the social, philosophical, and political concerns of his time and how his work contributed to the nation's efforts to establish an American identity. A section of the exhibition has been hung to represent the interior of a 19th-century art gallery, such as one in Peale's Baltimore Museum.
