Hamadryad: Meditation as Sculpture

Japanese artist Okura Jira's series of three wood sculptures unite his ideas about nature, form, process, and spirit. The Greek spirit Hamadryad inhabited all living trees and was the counterpart to the Japanese kami--the unseen Shinto deities who dwell in mountains, rivers, trees, and other features of the natural world. The sculptures are made from a piece of kunosoki, an aromatic Japanese camphor laurel.
