Gateway to Gold Mountain

July 9, 2001 – August 27, 2001

Museum: Arts and Industries Building

Location: North Hall

See 5 photomural vignettes, photographs, and a video are used to chronicle the immigration experience of more than 175,000 Chinese immigrants who came to America between 1910 and 1940 -- their attitudes, hopes and fears, as well as the discrimination they faced. Ferried from ships to the isolated Angel Island Immigration Station in San Francisco Bay, they were greeted by an America far different from the land of opportunity many called "Gold Mountain."

Produced by the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation. It is coordinated by the Smithsonian's Asian Pacific American Studies Program.
