Forgotten Roots: African American Muslims in Early America

July 11, 2005 – October 16, 2005

Museum: Anacostia Community Museum

Location: Main Gallery

Through a range of artifacts, diaries, documents, and photographs, this exhibition shows how newly transported African Muslims played significant roles as explorers, entrepreneurs, educators, and patriotic servicemen in America during the 18th and 19th centuries. It also presents vignettes of figures--enslaved and free--known for their passion for freedom, their pioneering spirit, and their steadfast faith.

This exhibition is the first phase of the Anacostia Museum's multi-year initiative to document family and community life among African American Muslims.
