Location: Directions Gallery, 3rd Floor
Los Angeles-based artist Tim Hawkinson (b. 1960) uses castoff materials, deadpan humor, kitsch imagery and quirky mechanics to create constructions and drawings that are subtle meditations on human nature and the passage of time. Included are a clocklike composition of toy-scale ship masts, a full-length self-portrait in one continuous, lacelike line representing bathtub drainage patterns, and various freestanding and hanging constructions, some with sound. This is the artist's first one-person museum presentation on the East Coast.
