Museum: Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden
Location: Outside on the Plaza
For a single 8-hour period using simple materials (paper, pens, tables, chairs, ladders, a "boom box"), New York-based artist Oliver Herring (b. 1964, Germany) creates Task on the Hirshhorn plaza as part of the Directions series. This project offers the public, particularly the diverse population of D.C. residents who represent a micro-society, to make art together in a public setting. Herring is known for his explorations of human interaction on an intimate, gentle, and even healing level, examining how relationships between individuals and their sense of community develop and grow.
