Museum: Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden

Location: Directions Gallery, Third Floor

2 suites of prints, 9 audio sculptures, and 3 related wall drawings focus on his life and slavery. The exhibition includes "crate" sculptures that re-create the experiences of Henry "Box" Brown, who shipped himself from Richmond to Philadelphia to gain freedom from slavery. The title was taken from Gwendolyn Brooks's 1981 book of poems "To Disembark."
