Brought together for the first time for a Directions project are two artists who examine the architectural and artistic "ruins" of the recent past. Representing the new generation of conceptualists, Cyprien Gaillard (b. 1980, Paris, France) and Mario Garcia Torres (b. 1975, Monclova, Mexico) both employ similar materials and forms, like photography and original musical compositions, to investigate history's idealistic movements and to consider what kind of foundation they provide today's visual output and cultural thinking.
A selection from Gaillard's archive of 900 Polaroid photographs depicting vacant or nearly abandoned buildings from Chernoble to Detroit are on view. Also included is a three-part video composition Desniansky Raion (2007), scored by Gaillard's musical collaborator Koudlam.
In Torres's room-sized installation Je ne sais si c'en est la cause (2009), he revisited Daniel Buren's commissioned project to decorate a luxury resort in the Virgin Islands. Two slide projections juxtapose images of the heyday of the hotel with its current overgrown and decayed state.
