Museum: Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden
Location: Lower Level
This exhibition is the fourth in the Directions series launched by the museum in 1979 as a showcase for new works by contemporary artists. 8 Americans are represented by nearly 40 works in two broad thematic sections. The first, "Toward the Baroque," focuses on artists' dramatic manipulation of scale, light and illusionistic spatial devices, and includes works by James Turrell, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Hope Sandrow. The second section, "Painting into Nature," presents painterly and fantasized or invented scenes inspired by visions of nature and reflecting the primeval attraction of wilderness, and includes works by Alice Fellows, Melissa Miller, Yolanda Shashaty, and Peter Fleps.
