This exhibition marks the 20th anniversary of the Anacostia Museum and examines the central role of black churches in various areas of black community development in 18th- and 19th-century Boston, Savannah, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, and Richmond. Among the many artifacts included are the first hymnbook compiled by the Rev. Richard Allen, and an original pew (ca. 1781-1804) from his church, Mother Bethel A.M.E. in Philadelphia.
