This exhibition illustrates the evolution of Chinese calligraphy over 3,500 years. Objects featured in the exhibition include 20 examples of late 18th-, 19th-, and early 20th-century Chinese calligraphy; an inscribed ancient jade and inscribed ancient bronze; a small box containing four inscribed bamboo slips; a small inscribed Buddhist statue; a handscroll rubbing; and a group of writing tools. Many of these items were donated to the Freer in 1997 in honor of its 75th anniversary by Robert Hatfield Ellsworth.
