Azucar! The Life and Music of Celia Cruz

May 18, 2005 – May 29, 2006 (new closing date)

Museum: American History Museum

Location: 3rd Floor, West Wing (near Popular Culture)

The life of legendary Cuban-born singer Celia Cruz (1924-2003) is explored through costumes, wigs, shoes, photographs, video, and music. Cruz's five-decade career took her from humble beginnings in Havana, Cuba, to the United States, where she became the undisputed "Queen of Latin Music." She was one of the few women to succeed in the male-dominated world of salsa, a musical genre born in New York City that combines Afro-Latin rhythms with blues, jazz, and rock.

Definition of Azucar: sugar (in Spanish)
