November 15, 1985 – January 11, 1987
Museum: American History Museum
Location: 1st Floor, Special Exhibits Gallery
The automobile enabled Americans to discover beautiful but remote areas of the country, and highway travel itself became a form of entertainment. On view are a 1921 motor home, a 1928 tent trailer, a 1934 Ford and 1935 house trailer, and a 1918 Oldsmobile touring car in a camping setting. Highway signs; motel signs; postcards, decals, and other souvenirs; and family vacation snapshots complete the exhibition. One section, "Jim Crow on the Road," highlights the difficulties of black travelers in finding accommodations.
