Museum: Sackler Gallery
Location: 1st Level
On view are 36 objects on loan from the Byzantine Collection at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C., while Dumbarton Oaks is closed for renovation. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a bronze rearing horse with Himyaritic inscriptions -- one of the finest surviving examples of ancient south Arabian bronzework. Other objects include jewelry -- i.e., necklaces -- and secular and liturgical vessels made with various metals. Note: The Byzantine Collection at Dumbarton Oaks houses important metalwork created during the Byzantine Empire (324-1453) and by related cultures in the ancient and medieval Mediterranean worlds.
