Museum: Natural History Museum
Location: Special Exhibition Gallery, 1st Floor, off Rotunda (Hall 10)
This exhibition celebrates the centennial anniversary of the establishment of the National Wildlife Refuge System and explains the growth of the System since President Teddy Roosevelt designated Pelican Island the first Refuge in 1903. Personalities and legislative initiatives that represent the "defining moments" in the history and evolution of the System are explored through artifacts, objects, and specimens. Each of the units in the exhibition highlights a refuge (or several refuges) and explains why they were established.
