A Measure of Earth: The Cole-Ware Collection of American Baskets

The museum celebrates the generous gift of 79 baskets from collectors Steven R. Cole and Martha G. Ware. The baskets on view were made between 1983 and 2011 almost entirely from un-dyed native materials -- grasses, trees, vines, and bark -- gathered by the 60 artists represented. The forms range from baskets for eggs, harvest, and market to those for sewing, laundry, and fishing creels. Together, they present an encyclopedic view of the medium and reveal the central role basketry has played in the everyday life of Americans.
