Bunson, Margaret, & Stephen M. Bunson, Encyclopedia of Ancient Mesoamerica, 1996, Facts on File, New York. Information about the people, places, and events of Mesoamerica, from 11,000 BC to 1500 AD.

Champagne, Duane, editor, The Native North American Almanac, second edition, 2001, Gale Research, Detroit, MI. Includes brief biographies of 470 prominent Native North Americans, in addition to a chronology, and chapters on historical demography, languages, law and legislation, activism, religion, education, and the arts.

Cohen, Felix, Cohen's Handbook of Federal Indian Law, 2005, LexisNexis, Newark, NJ. This is the standard reference work on federal Indian law. First published in 1942.

Cutler, Charles L., O Brave New Words!: Native American Loanwords in Current English, 1994, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, and Tracks that Speak: The Legacy of Native American Words in North American Culture, 2002, Houghton Mifflin, Boston. Two studies of Native American words that have passed into English.

Davis, Mary B., editor, Native America in the Twentieth Century: An Encyclopedia, 1994, 1996, Garland Publishing, New York. A comprehensive reference work on Native Americans in the twentieth century, the encyclopedia includes signed articles authored by Native Americans and other experts on contemporary tribes and issues of importance to Indians living in today's world. Arranged alphabetically, entries range from short articles on small groups to detailed discussions of larger groups. Subject entries--health, education, art, government policy, and economic issues, for example--are also included. The encyclopedia is thoroughly indexed.

Dillehay, Thomas D., The Settlement of the Americas: A New Prehistory, 2000, Basic Books, Perseus Books Group, New York. An account of recent thinking regarding the first settlement of the Americas based on science from many disciplines. The author has carried out extensive archaeological research at a number of sites, including Monte Verde in Chile.

Estell, Kenneth, editor, Native Americans Information Directory, 1998. Gale Research, Detroit. A guide to organizations, agencies, institutions, programs, publications, services, and other resources concerned with the indigenous peoples of the United States and Canada.

Evans, Susan Toby, & David L. Webster, editors, Archaeology of Ancient Mexico & Central America: An Encyclopedia, 2001, Garland Publishing, New York. Information on the major culture areas, archaeological sites, and daily life of the ancient peoples, with maps and photographs.

Hirschfelder, Arlene, & Martha Kreipe de Montaño (Prairie Band Potawatomi), The Native American Almanac: A Portrait of Native America Today, 1998, John Wiley & Sons, Somerset, NJ. Includes infor-mation on Indian-white relations, Native Americans today, treaties, tribal governments, languages, education, religion, games and sports, and Indians in film and video. Also lists the addresses of all U.S. tribal governments.

Hirschfelder, Arlene, & Paulette Molin, The Encyclopedia of Native American Religions: An Introduction, updated edition, 2000, Facts on File Publications, New York. Foreword by Walter R. Echo-Hawk. Includes information on ceremonies, individuals, places, and concepts from Native American groups throughout North America.

Hoxie, Frederick E., editor, Encyclopedia of North American Indians, 1996, Houghton Mifflin, Boston. Entries by over 260 contributors on a diverse assortment of topics, tribes, and individuals.

Johansen, Bruce E., & Donald A. Grinde, Jr., The Encyclopedia of Native American Biography, 1998, Da Capo Press, New York. Brief, alphabetically arranged biographies of Indians and of non-Indians who were important in Indian history, from the early contact period through the present day. Originally pub-lished by Henry Holt & Co., 1997.

Klein, Barry T., Reference Encyclopedia of the American Indian, 12th edition, 2006, Todd Publications, Boca Raton, FL. Lists the names, addresses, and phone numbers of all U.S. Indian reservations and tribal councils, and of government agencies, Indian schools, national, state, and local organizations, museums, libraries, colleges, periodicals, and sources of financial aid. Includes a section on Can-adian organizations.

Lester, Patrick D., The Biographical Directory of Native American Painters, 1995, SIR Publications, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Distributed by the University of Oklahoma Press, Norman. Foreword by Jeanne O. Snodgrass. Includes over 3,000 painters working from 1800 to the present. Typical entries list the artist's tribal affiliation and tribal name, birth and death dates, residence, publications, exhibits, awards and honors, supplemented by brief passages of human interest and excerpts from professional reviews and critical essays.

Nabokov, Peter, & Robert Easton, Native American Architecture, 1989, Oxford University Press, Ox-ford and New York. A detailed, well illustrated study of North American Indian houses, organized by region.

Paterek, Josephine, Encyclopedia of American Indian Costume, 1994, W.W. Norton & Company, New York. An overview of North American Indian clothing, organized by region. Includes information on men's and women's basic clothing, footwear, outerwear, hairstyles, headgear, accessories, jewelry, and changes in dress after European contact. (Note: not a "how-to" book.)

Reno, Dawn, Contemporary Native American Artists, 1995, Alliance Publishing, Brooklyn, NY. Brief profiles of over 1,000 artists from over 100 Native American Nations.

Russell, George L. (Saginaw Chippewa), American Indian Facts of Life, 2004, Native Data.Com, Phoenix. A brief, useful digest emphasizing con-temporary demographics. Also available from Native Data.com is an information-packed wall map of Indian country today.

Schwarz, Stuart, & Frank Salomon, editors, The Cambridge History of the Native Peoples of the Americas, Volume 3, South America, 1999, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge & New York. In two parts. Articles by numerous contributors.

Swanton, John R., The Indian Tribes of North America, 1952, reprinted 1969, 1979, Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington, D.C. A detailed study of North American tribes, arranged by State. Especially useful for the reader who wants to know what Indian nation occupied a specific region of a given State at a particular time.

Sturtevant, William C., general editor, Handbook of North American Indians, Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington, D.C. When complete, the handbook will consist of twenty volumes. A volume on each of the major culture areas of North America is now available, plus two topic volumes (languages, Indian-white relations).

Tiller, Veronica E. Velarde, Tiller's Guide to Indian Country: Economic Profiles of American Indian Reservations, 1996, 2005, BowArrow Publishing Co., Albuquerque. Profiles of all U.S. Federal and State Indian Reservations, including the Alaska Native Corporations. Includes information on economy, history, culture, government, and community facilities.

Waldman, Carl, Atlas of the North American Indian, with maps and illustrations by Molly Braun, 1985, revised edition 2000, Facts on File, New York. Includes information on Indian history, past and present locations of peoples, a chronology, and over 100 maps.

Waldman, Carl, Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes, 1988, revised edition1999, Checkmark Books (Facts on File), New York. brief but detailed alphabetically arranged listings for over 150 Native peoples, plus information on culture areas, language families, and prehistoric Indian cultures.

Waldman, Carl, Who Was Who in Native American History, 1990, Facts on File, New York. Brief, alphabetically arranged biographies of Indians, and of non-Indians who were important in Indian history, from the early contact period through 1900.
