Nine revolvers from NMAH. Photo by Eric Long. Copyright 1993 Smithsonian Institution. Nine revolvers from the past exhibit "It's A Material World: What Things Are Made Of And Why" in the National Museum of American History. The revolver was a rarity until Colt and others made a reliable weapon. The barrel and firing mechanisms are steel. The grips are made from a variety of materials: plastic, hard rubber, ivory, etc., depending on the maker, status and wealth of the owner. Smithsonian Photo by Eric Long.
